April 24th saw the second day session of the 2017/2018 orientation programme. Chairing the session was Prof E.A Aiyelari, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration of the University of Ibadan. The program did not kick off until 10am although students have been filing in as early as 6am at International Conference Centre.
Professor Aiyelari, who gave the welcome address, admonished the new students on some tips on how to succeed in the university and to make academics their
primary, secondary and tertiary focus. He told students to count themselves lucky; because only about 3900 of them were admitted, out of the qualified 9000 applicants. He also told them to feel free to make mistakes as no one is above them and also ask for help when they need it. He also noted that he has observed indecent dressing among some students in the hall and warned against it. "You have no excuse to be withdrawn from the University", the DVC concluded. Shortly after his address, Professor Ogbebor the first female professor of Mathematics in the University of Ibadan was welcomed to the high-table with a loud applause.
Later as at 10:25am the director of Sports in the University, Dr D.I Salami took to the podium to enlighten the students about sports in UI and the benefits of Sports to students. He also spoke on the sporting facilities in the university and highlighted that students who do well in sports also tend to do well in their academics. "UI stadium has natural grass in which, if there is torrent, you'll feel water only in your body, but not in your feet." Dr Salami continued. He concluded that the students should “look at sports as a prerequisite of gaining a better life in the university.”
The Chief Security Officer of UI, Mr. Joseph Akindayo also gave some security tips to students. Telling them the Do’s and Don’t’s to apply in their campus life so that they can always be safe, he read 22 security tips from his paper presentation. Afterwards, Mr Ganiou Adeniran, Chairman, Anti-Cultism Campaign Committee (ACCC), University of Ibadan, presented his paper on the "Dangers of cultism and Anti-social Conduct", and elaborated on the university’s efforts in the fight against cultism shortly after Professor Ogbebor also came forward to give more tips on how students can avoid and renounce being caught up in cult-like situations and groups. Professor Kehinde, Chairman of the Senate on Curriculum, presented his paper on "UI grading system and other curriculum". He encouraged students to work hard. He gave an example of last session in which due to poor results, over 300 students were advised to withdraw from the university.
Professor Festus Etadon, the deputy registrar, warned the students against involvement in radical student activism known as ALUTA. He stated “aluta, burning of tyres and blocking of roads do not belong to the 21st century, we belief in negotiation and dialogue”.
During the interactive session, Professor Aiyelari gave some figures on how much it takes to run the university. He stated that the university pays about 42-43 million naira monthly to the IBEDC (Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company) and that it also takes about 75 million naira to run the university monthly. He furthermore warned against cooking with gas or cooking in the room in the hostels, giving an example of how a part of Queen Elizabeth 2 hall was burned down due to a student making such a mistake.
At 12.20pm the officials entertained questions from some of the students. In a reply to a question from a student, the deputy registrar warned the freshers not to complete their course registration on the portal yet, because some courses would still be added. He mentioned "Basic Communication in French (GES108)" as now a newly required course for all students, starting from this session.
